The Department of Maritime Warfare (DMW), formally called Naval Faculty became functional on 1 Sept 81 with an intake of 13 students. Hitherto, naval officers were trained at the Army Faculty. The establishment of Naval Faculty marked a great stride in the history of the College as it became fully tri-service. The Junior Division of the Faculty was established in September 1984 with an intake of 14 students.

The main training focus of the DMW is to expand the professional knowledge and administrative ability of selected naval officers of the ranks of Lieutenant (Lt) and Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) for the Junior Course (JC) and Senior Course (SC) respectively. This would enable them take command and staff appointments appropriate to their ranks. 
 

The Senior Division of the  Maritime Warfare Department conducts a one – year joint course per academic year for the officers of the rank of major or its equivalent. The Junior Division of the  department also conducts 2 by 20 – week courses for officers of the rank of captain in the Army or its equivalent in each academic year.  Successful students are awarded Pass Staff Course (psc) and Pass Junior Staff Course (pjsc) at the end of the Senior and Junior Courses respectively.

 

Activities
Exercises: Some of the department exercises include Naval War Game and Sea Power Project. Military History Package: Students are required to research into campaigns in syndicates and thereafter make formal presentations on the campaigns studied. Visits: Operational training visits, which form part of the College's course curricula are conducted for the courses of both Senior and Junior Divisions in the Department.

Achievement   The DMW has made giant strides since its inception. It has trained about 1360 and 999 Officers in the Junior and Senior courses respectively. These officers were given standard training and the feedback from the field has been commendable. It has also been training officers from sister African countries. The DMW has implemented the College’s new curricula, which emphasizes Jointness. New exercises and presentations were written in line with the new curricula. So far, students have been responding positively to training. Their levels have improved Significantly since the beginning of the course. They are now able to apply the concept of manoeuvre warfare to joint operations. The Department was able to clear the backlog of officers for the JC; while that of the SC had been cleared with the last Senior Course 28. It is gratifying to note that the department has continued to maintain a high standard of discipline by both staff and students..
