DEPARTMENT OF LAND WARFARE

AFCSC STRUCTURE

The Army Command and Staff College was established in May 1976 to train middle cadre NA officers on command and staff duties. The College then was conceived as an Army Staff College modeled after the staff College in Camberley England. The College was later expanded to a tri-service institution, which led to the change of name. The Department of Land Warfare, which was till 2002 known as the Army Faculty could thus be regarded as the cradle of the Armed Forces and Command and Staff College since it has been in existence right from its inception.

The main objective of the department is to train middle cadre Nigerian Army officers in command and staff duties. Middle cadre officers from other allied countries have also benefited from this training.

  Activities / Achievements

Training activities remain the real objectives of the department. The essence of this is to ensure that the training objectives of the College are realized. The training activities apart from the normal syndicate works of instruction and tutorials include indoor telephone battles, tactical exercises without troops, static display demonstrations, visits to training schools/major formations and other relevant establishments.

The main objective of the Junior Course is to train Captains as junior commanders and staff officers at the unit level. That of the Senior Course is to train middle level manpower for staff appointments at formation HQs. A Senior Course graduate would effectively command a battalion in future.

A total of 1,739 officers have so far been trained on the Senior Course of the department. Of these, 1,625 are Nigerians while 114 are from sister African and other countries. Of the 2,350 graduates so far trained on the Junior Course of the department, 2,284 are Nigerians while 166 are from friendly African countries.
