DEPARTMENT OF AIR WARFARE

AFCSC STRUCTURE

The Department of Air Warfare (DAW), formally called Air Faculty, was formally established as arm of the then Command and Staff College Jaji in early 1978 vides Established Order 01/78 dated 16 Mar 78. In that same year, negotiations were concluded between Great Britain and Nigeria for the provision of a Royal Air Force Advisory Team (RAFA) to run both the Senior and Junior Course of the Air Faculty.

Hitherto, few NAF officers were nominated to attend the senior course as the forerunner of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), that is the Army Command and Staff College, which opened on 29 May 76. Out of 68 officers who attended the first full Army Command and Staff Course, SCS 1, only 2 NAF officers participated.

The first Air Faculty senior course comprised 20 NAF officers. The NAF officers spent the first 2 out of the 6 terms of the course with the Army Command and Staff College (ACSC), opened on 26 Feb 79 at the NAF GTG Kaduna. Subsequently, the Air Faculty ran 4 Senior Officers Staff Course (SOSC) for short duration to clear the backlog of untrained NAF senior officers. The JCSS on the other hand, ran a 19 - weeks course for flight lieutenants. The JCSS  later moved to Jaji when the faculty building was completed. The Air Faculty was redesignated DAW in 2002, when the College also changed it name to AFCSC.

The Senior Divisions of the  Air Warfare Departments conduct a one – year joint course per academic year for the officers of the rank of major or its equivalent. The Junior Courses of the  department conduct two 20 – week courses for officers of the rank of captain in the Army or its equivalent in each academic year.

Successful students are awarded Pass Staff Course (psc) and Pass Junior Staff Course (pjsc) at the end of the Senior and Junior Courses respectively.

  Activities / Achievements

The department of Air Warfare has since inception graduated about 715 officers in the senior course and 1,515 officers in the junior course. These figures include officers from sister African countries and civilians from the Ministry of Defence.
