AVM Sonni Bernard Enemuadia Gberevbie was born on 15
November, 1953 at Jos in Plateau State. He hails from
Orerokpe in Okpe Local Government Area, Delta State. He
attended Local Authority Primary School, Orerokpe
(1960-1966) from where he proceeded to St Enda’s
College, Agbarho Warri, in 1967 graduating with WASC
Division 1 in 1971. He worked briefly with the
Department of Petroleum Resources of the then Ministry
of Mines and Power as an Assistant Petroleum Inspector
between 1972 and 1973 before proceeding to the Nigerian
Defence Academy as a potential pilot Cadet intake of the
Short Service Course 7 on 6 January, 1974. He holds an
LL B degree from the University of Benin (1992); BL from
the Nigerian Law School, Lagos (1993); and M Sc
Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan (2001).
He is a Fellow of the National War College and a
Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. |

COURSES ATTENDED
AVM Gberevbie was commissioned as officer in the rank of
Pilot Officer on 7 June, 1976. He started his flying
career at the Primary Flying Training Wing, Kaduna in
1974 before proceeding to the Royal Air Force Flying
Training School, Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire, UK in June
1975. He was at the Basic Flying Training School, Kano
from July 1976 to October 1977 before returning to the
Flying Training Wing Kaduna for the Transport Pilots’
Course the same year. He attended the Nigeria Airways
School in 1980 for the Fokker 27 Ground Academics Course
and qualified as a pilot on the F-27 Troopship in 1981.
In 1985, he attended the Fokker Training School,
Amsterdam for the Maritime Air Operations course and
qualified as a maritime pilot on the F-27 MPA. He was in
Kiel, Germany for another maritime course with the
German Navy in1988. AVM Gberevbie has about 3000 flying
hours and has flown several aircraft among which are the
Bulldog 123, the Jet Provost, the L-29 Albatross, the
Do-28 D2, the Do 128-6, Do-128 MPA, the F-27 Troopship
and the F-27 MPA.
Other professional military courses he attended include
the Junior Staff Course at the Command and Staff College
Jaji, Kaduna in 1983 where he emerged as the
best-all-round student in the Air Faculty; and the
Senior Staff Course at the same College in 1990 where he
emerged again as the best student in Air Faculty and won
the Commandant’s prize for the best College Paper for
CSC Course 12. He was also a participant of Course 9 of
the National War College, from 2000-2001 where he won
both the Chief of Defence Staff’s and the Chief of the
Air Staff’s prizes for excellence. In 2003, he attended
the International Joint Operations Course at the
Maritime Warfare Centre, HMS DRYARD Southwick,
Portsmouth UK.
APPOINTMENTS HELD
Some of the appointments held by AVM Gberevbie
include: Staff Officer II Operations, Air Transport
Group; Operations Officer, 81 Air Centre Benin City;
Commanding Officer, Operations Wing, 81 Air centre Benin
City; Staff officer 1 Personnel, HQ NAF; Directing Staff
and Chief Instructor, Command and Staff College, Jaji;
Directing Staff, National War College, Abuja; ECOMOG Air
Detachment Commander, NAF Detachment, Lungi in Sierra
Leone; Deputy Director Operations, HQ NAF. AVM Gberevbie
rose through the promotion ladder becoming a group
captain in January 1997 and Air Commodore in 2002. He
was promoted to his present rank of Air Vice Marshal on
7 January 2005. He was appointed the Director of Plans
HQ NAF on 17 February 2003. He held this position until
20 October 2008 when he was appointed as the Commandant
of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji thus
becoming the longest serving Director of Plans in the
history of the NAF.

HOBBIES
His hobbies include reading, writing, cooking and
watching people. He is also an ardent squash player,
golfer and swimmer.
